The Importance of CPR Certification
CPR Saves Lives
Getting certified in CPR is strongly recommended for everyone, no matter who you are, but it is especially recommended for parents. Choking is the fourth-leading cause of accidental death for children under 5 years of age. This is largely because children in this age group are much more likely to put things in their mouths, such as marbles and other small objects, than children who are older. Certain foods also pose a choking hazard such as raw carrots, hot dogs, nuts, and grapes — foods which young children tend to eat a lot of. If you have young children or you are ever responsible for the care of them, you should definitely get certified in CPR.

Learn CPR — Save a Life
Being certified to perform CPR can actually help save a life. Once heart beat, lung function, and respirations have stopped, CPR can be performed. CPR is most effective when begun as soon as possible, and the human body can only be deprived of oxygen for about six minutes before irreversible damage and death occur. Waiting for an ambulance to arrive can waste precious minutes. If an individual still has a heartbeat but needs assistance breathing, rescue breathing can be performed. Because of this, knowing CPR can actually mean the difference between life and death.
CPR is Great — CPR and Basic First Aid Is Even Better
In addition to CPR, basic first aid is also important in handling a medical emergency. Knowing basic first aid can be lifesaving if an emergency strikes. You should know how to apply pressure to a wound, how to treat a burn, and how to fashion a sling out of any type of cloth. Many people actually treat burns improperly because they haven’t been instructed in how to properly handle them. Learning basic first aid can solve this common mistake.
Where to Learn
Finding a place to learn CPR and basic first aid isn’t hard at all. Check with your local hospitals or American Red Cross chapter to see if they offer courses in CPR certification and basic first aid. Getting certified in CPR can be accomplished in as little as one afternoon, so it is definitely a worthwhile pursuit.
Do yourself a favor and get certified in CPR. You never know when you might need it.
