The American Red Cross
The American Red Cross: What it is and how it can help you.
So you’ve heard of the American Red Cross, but you’re not exactly sure what it is or what they do. Don’t remain in the dark. The American Red Cross is America’s leading disaster relief organization and you may one day need their services.

What the American Red Cross Is
The American Red Cross was founded in 1881 by Clara Barton. The mission of the organization was a noble one – to prevent and relieve pain and suffering due to war. Nowadays, war isn’t the only thing that the American Red Cross cleans up after. It also helps alleviate the pain and suffering caused by natural disasters such as hurricanes, tornadoes and earthquakes.
Blood Drives
One of the most precious gifts the American Red Cross gives to others is the gift of life. That is, the gift of life through blood. Without the blood donated through the Red Cross, thousands of victims across the world would die. In fact, the American Red Cross has approximately 4 million people donating blood through the organization. That’s a lot of lives saved thanks to this organization.
The Red Cross Today
The Red Cross is very active and the victims of Hurricane Katrina saw just how hard the Red Cross works to help out in times of need. From providing food and water to trying to keep spirits up, the American Red Cross was in the middle of it all. The Red Cross was also there to help with the tsunami and will be there for people again when the next disaster strikes.
If there’s one thing that can be counted on, it’s that when disaster comes calling, the American Red Cross is there to answer the call.
Money: The Nitty Gritty
The American Red Cross is not a government-run agency. In fact, it relies on donations in order to operate. However, the American Red Cross is one of the only organizations that put approximately 91 percent of each dollar you give to humanitarian services and programs.
In addition to relying on donations, the American Red Cross also relies on volunteers. With over 900 chapters across America, there’s sure to be one in your area. If you’re interested in volunteering for the American Red Cross, contact your local chapter by visiting the American Red Cross website.
