See How Easily You Can Put Together an Emergency Kit
Five easy steps to putting together an emergency kit.
So you want to put together an emergency kit but you don’t know where to start? An emergency kit is a vital element in your overall emergency preparedness. I’m Ryan Edgerton and I’m going to give you five easy steps towards putting together your very own emergency kit.

Step 1 — Containers
The first thing you’re going to need when putting together your emergency kit is plastic containers to hold everything in. You’ll want to make sure they’re big enough to hold what you need them to and that the seal with an airtight lid. You’ll need two containers for your emergency kit. One for food and one for clothing and other non-food items.
Step 2 — Food and Water
Now that you have your containers, you’re going to want to store your food and water in one of the containers. You can use bottled water or you can get bags of water from an army surplus or other survival equipment store.
You’ll want non-perishable food, so canned items are best if you don’t want the survival rations that many stores provide. If you opt for canned goods, make sure that you have a non-electric can opener so you can open your food even if there’s no power.
Step 3 — First Aid Kit
Any good emergency kit includes its own first aid kit. You want to make sure that you put together a first aid kit with bandages, gauze, hydrogen peroxide, rubbing alcohol, surgical needles, strong thread, medicines (over the counter and prescription), ice packs, and heat packs. When packing your prescription medicines, make sure you have at least four days worth of medication on hand.
Step 4 — Clothing
You’ll want to pack enough clothing to get you through three days. If you live in an area where the climate changes drastically, you’ll want to pack both cold-weather and warm-weather clothing in your emergency kit. Make sure you include shoes that are sturdy and comfortable to walk in as you may be walking for long distances.
Step 5 — Shelter
At the least, you’re going to want a blanket. A tent is an even better option. If you’re packing blankets, make sure you have one for every member of your family. Solar blankets are probably best for your survival kit. If you’re packing a tent, make sure that your tent is light enough to carry, but big enough to accommodate your entire family.
