Safety Tips For Drinking Water

Human body is made up of more than 60% of water. A human can only survive for a week without drinking water. Due to severe effect of pollution nowadays it has become difficult to find clean and safe drinking water. Contamination of water with disease causing bacteria and parasites and also contamination by chemicals can harm you in many ways. These tend to cause problems to people with weak immune system and are also a major source of carcinogenic pollutants entering the food chain.

Arm yourself with information about the water you drink and check for the following:

  • Test the quality of your water source: If you are using a well as a source of drinking water, get it tested for quality annually and ensure that it’s clean.
  • Get your tap water tested to find any issues of contamination due to corroded pipes.
  • Pre-treat and purify drinking water before use.
  • Ensure clean and safe storage of the purified drinking water.

Water Purification:

If the water quality test results indicate that the water supply is contaminated, it should be purified before using for drinking purpose. This is a two step process, involving clarifying and later disinfecting the water.

  • Clarify
  • Cloudy or muddy water can be made clear by passing through a filter such as fine cloth, or mechanical filters. Allow the filtered water to settle and then disinfect this water before use.
  • Disinfect
  • Boiling Water: Most of the water-borne microbes can be eliminated by boiling water for 4-5 minutes. On the other hand, boiling water for a prolonged period of time may also concentrate the toxins in the water, if present.
  • Chlorination: Treat the non-chlorinated water with bleach before using for drinking purpose. Add 8 drops of liquid chlorine bleach (6% sodium hypochlorite) for every gallon of water. Ensure that the bleach you use for pre-treatment must be free from scents, additives and thickeners.
  • Commercial Water Purifiers: Commercial water purifiers are effective in both filtration and purification of water contaminated with bacteria or parasites, heavy metals and toxic pollutants. While water purifiers are effective in water treatment but their efficiency depends a lot on their design, type and condition along with their proper use. There are various commercial water purifiers (distillers, RO water purifiers etc.) in the market that serve the purpose of ensuring safe drinking water.

Water Storage
Clean and safe storage of treated drinking water is also an important aspect of maintaining drinking water safety. Only use PETE plastic or food-grade containers must be used to store water. Sanitize the containers by using bleach. Container must be refilled regularly. Also it is recommended to store water in a cool and dark place.
