Reducing Your Risk of an Emergency Situation during the Winter Months
How You Heat Your Home Can Present a Dangerous Emergency
Carbon monoxide and fires are two of the biggest emergency concerns for homeowners particularly during the winter months. Many parts of the nation have been experiencing extremely cold temperatures recently. When the weather gets this cold, it is very important to follow some important tips to avoid an emergency situation such as a house fire or high levels of carbon monoxide in your home.
Your Oven Is Not a Heater
It is really never a good idea to use your oven as a source of heat. If you have a gas oven, doing so can cause dangerous levels of carbon monoxide in your home, and using either an electric oven or a gas oven as a source of heat is a fire hazard.
It can be tempting to use your oven as a source of heat with the high cost of oil and electricity. You might be experiencing a tight few months and are overwhelmed with bills, but it’s still dangerous to use your oven for heat. Look into programs in your community that offer subsidized heating for reduced-income individuals.
Watch Those Electric Contraptions
If you use an electric heater, you have to be especially careful. Make sure that there are no items obstructing the path of the heater. Also make sure nothing is touching the heater. If the heater is close to your bed, you might kick your blanket off in your sleep, and it could end up over the heater. Make sure you position the electric heater a safe distance from your bed.
Don’t Run Your Car
No matter how convenient it might seem never start your car while it is in your garage even if the garage door is open. This is a very dangerous practice. Keeping your home free of an emergency situation such as a fire or toxic levels of carbon monoxide takes special considerations during the winter months but is well worth the attention required.
