How to Respond to a Dental Emergency
Tips for Handling a Dental Emergency
If you are faced with a dental emergency, there is some important information you should keep in mind. Treating a dental emergency requires special care and consideration and if you don’t know how to deal with it, you can cause unnecessary pain and suffering where help is desperately needed. The following tips can help you when deciding what to do or how to react in a dental emergency.

Different Dental Emergencies Call For Different Actions
If you are faced with a toothache, you probably won’t think of it as a dental emergency. Depending on how much pain you are in, it might or not be an urgent matter. The first thing you should do if you experience a toothache is to rinse your mouth out and floss. Floss will remove any leftover food particles which can irritate gums. If your child is experiencing a toothache, look to see if he or she is getting a new tooth. A popsicle can help soothe the area. Any time you or a family member experiences any trauma or injury to the face, you should visit the dentist.
If your child knocks out a tooth, have he or she bite down on a clean cloth to try to stop the bleeding. Even losing a baby tooth prematurely is considered a dental emergency and can have an impact later in life, so see the dentist. If it is a permanent tooth, you definitely will need to see the dentist immediately. If your child can hold the tooth in place and bite down, have your child do so. If not, place the tooth in milk and go immediately to your dentist. If your dentist isn’t available, you will need to go to the emergency room.
If a piece of your child’s tooth breaks off, put the broken piece in milk and go to the dentist. Again, a dental emergency such as this needs immediate treatment.
Familiarize yourself with the above tips so that you can respond appropriately the next time you are faced with a dental emergency. Knowing what to do when experiencing a dental emergency can affect the outcome.
