U.S. Senate Recognizes Church’s 75th Anniversary of Welfare Program

This month the United States Senate unanimously passed a resolution recognizing the 75th anniversary of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints’ Welfare Program. Aside from noting the program’s historic anniversary, the resolution congratulated, “the members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for the significant contribution that its Welfare Program has had on United States citizens and many people throughout the world; and commend[ed] the many efforts made by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and its members, through its Welfare Program, to serve others regardless of religious affiliation.” The full text of the resolution can be read here.
In the April 2011 General Conference of the Church, President Henry B. Eyring, First Counselor of the First Presidency, announced that, “To commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Church welfare program, members worldwide will be invited to participate in a day of service.” Consequently, members have participated in various service projects around the world organized by local church leaders.

Recently, President Dieter F. Uchtdorf, Second Counselor of the First Presidency, reflected on the good which such service-oriented efforts produce.

“I experienced firsthand the blessings of the welfare program of the Church,” said President Uchtdorf during the Church’s October 2011 General Conference. “Even though I was a young child, I still remember the sweet taste of canned peaches with cooked wheat and the special smell of the donated clothing sent to the postwar German Saints by caring Church members from the United States. I will never forget and I will always cherish these acts of love and kindness to those of us who were in great need.”

President Uchtdorf also stated, “This work of providing in the Lord’s way is not simply another item in the catalog of programs of the Church. It cannot be neglected or set aside. It is central to our doctrine; it is the essence of our religion.”

Helping Japan – One Facebook Page at a Time. 100% of Proceeds will go to Japanese Disaster Victims

How do you prepare for disaster? 9 out of 10 families would not be prepared if a major disaster were to hit the U.S. Chances are that most people would simply not know what to do, how to survive, or how to help others. We can all learn from the tragedy that has struck Japan.

Today, Japanese authorities raised the disaster severity to its highest level yet and said that the disaster is on par with catastrophe caused by the Chernobyl disaster.

If you are looking to help, it has never been as important as now.

Our Goal is to raise $100,000 for the Japanese disaster relief efforts. We can do this if everyone participates. You will be surprised at how quickly you can help raise this money – if you spread the word to get a large number of people are involved.

During this fundraiser, we will contribute all profits made (that’s right, 100%) from purchases through our LDS Preparedness Store. This means that 100% of the profits that would usually be made from selling our products, will instead be donated to the Japanese disaster victims via the American Red Cross. Each purchase made will generate a donation of, on average $30-$100, depending on the size of the order. The larger your order, the larger the donation.

Each day we will deposit the money raised into a fund for the Japanese Relief Efforts that you can watch grow. Track and follow the progress here here.

Donate Directly

Step 1: Decide that you would like to help the earthquake & Tsunami victims in Japan and Donate Directly. (2 minutes)

Step 2: Create a Preparedness Facebook page, which you then show to others. (5-10 minutes) . Create a page here (here is a sample effective page you can copy and paste from to save time).

Step 3: Spread the word and you could get a $200 Gift Certificate to Deseret Book, an LDS Deluxe 2-Person Survival Kit and more. (5 minutes+)

Each donation will go toward helping the Tsunami & Earthquake victims that have been affected by this disaster across Japan

Create a Ward or Stake Preparedness Facebook Page

The second and more exciting way to help raise money for the disaster relief efforts is to create a Facebook Page . For example, this could be a preparedness page dedicated to your Ward, Stake, or any other organization. It can also simply be an awareness page. Whatever theme you decide for your page, make sure to ad pictures and information so that others know what it is for (grab photos and info from our page) – and make sure to add a link of this blog post on your page.

Until April 31, 2011 5:00pm PST, One hundred percent (100%) of the profits generated by you or your organization’s Facebook page will be donated to the Japanese Disaster Relief Efforts via the American Red Cross.

This will help thousands of victims affected by the disaster.

For example, let’s say that only a 100 people decide to build a Facebook page and participate. Then let’s say that by suggesting the page to their friends, each of their pages get a total of a 100 Facebook fans. If only 10% of their fans (10 people) purchase something from our store, we would already raise over $50,000. If only a handful of members catch the vision of this fundraiser and share it with all of their Ward friends, we will easily reach our goal of $100,000.

At the end of the fundraiser, those who generated the biggest Facebook buzz will also win some great prizes as a thank you for their efforts. Be creative.

Just a Few Easy Steps to Participate

  1. Register with us. Just for creating a page, we will send you a free emergency preparedness kit!
  2. Following registration, create a Facebook page. Create the page for your Ward, Stake, awareness, or emergency preparedness. Remember – add pictures, information, and your store link to this blog post.
  3. Connect the Ecwid App to your page (to instantly create a preparedness store). Use the Ecwid Store ID: 91387
  4. Once the App is setup, Suggest the New Page to your friends.

That’s all. The profits of anything that your friends purchase from the store on your page will be donated to this great cause.

Once your page has been made, paste a link to it in the “Comments” section of this blog post and leave others feedback with suggestions for spreading the word.

Spread the Word – Tell Everyone You Know

There will also be a simultaneous challenge going on for those who would also like to spread the word about this unique fundraiser. The more Facebook fans you get to follow your page, the more money you help raise, the more you are rewarded. It’s that simple.

Most importantly, suggest and share your new preparedness page with others and explain to them what the page is about. Do the best you can to Tweet about it, tell your Bishop, Stake President, Ward friends, Facebook buddies, post on your blog, e-mail friends & family members, add to your e-mail signature, tell local media, etc.) and detail what you did in the comments below (on this post) to show others how to spread the word.

Tell your friends who are members of the church and encourage them to do the same – all it takes is a simple email. Bonus points go to people who act sooner vs. later.

Attention: Need Help to Ship Food to Japan – Calling on All Members to a Networking Challenge

Presumably all of you know that the people of Japan are have a very difficult struggle repairing their nation and cleaning up the disaster that has left the country devastated.

We would like to announce that a very generous farmer has offered to donate at least one container (800, 50# bags) of USDA #1 onions to the Japanese people each week for the next two months. This is a very large amount of onions that could help the people of Japan in a variety of ways.

In order to make this happen, the farmer is only asking that the freight charges for shipping be arranged.

This being said, we are asking for any and all of those who may know of any resources that would like to contribute to this cause to please step forward and contact us immediately.

It may be one or many people who contribute to the cause, a company or organization wanted to help, a Ward or Stake contribution, or any other means that can help get this food over to the Japanese people. We are asking for your help of any ideas to make this happen.

For those who take on this charge, we will personally thank and even advertise their company on our website for helping make this possible.
